Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe is expected back in court on Friday after offering to plead guilty to illegal immigration charges and accept deportation, despite facing more serious criminal allegations.

The son of former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe has been in custody since March alongside his co-accused, following an incident in which they allegedly shot and injured a gardener.

Prosecutors have charged the group with attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, as well as defeating the ends of justice.

Legal developments indicate that Mugabe is seeking to resolve the immigration aspect of the case by pleading guilty and consenting to deportation. However, it remains unclear how this move will impact the progression of the more serious criminal charges he faces.

Authorities say the firearm allegedly used in the shooting has not yet been recovered, a factor that could complicate investigations and prosecution.

The case has drawn significant attention given Mugabe's high-profile background, with proceedings expected to clarify whether his proposed plea will influence the broader case.

The matter continues on Friday.
