The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Infrastructure Development, Mr Patson Mbiriri has refuted claims that government has secured a pre-owned A320 Airbus for Air Zimbabwe.

Responding to media reports that the shareholder has purchased a pre-owned airbus from France, Mr Mbiriri said there was no transaction made to that effect, adding that the shareholder is still to mobilise sufficient funds to enable the revamping of the airline's fleet.

Reports in some sections of the local press alleged that the A320 aircraft touched down at the Harare International Airport in the late hours of Monday.

Air Zimbabwe, which has been struggling to recapitalise and settle its debt estimated at US$140 million, recently suspended London and Johannesburg flights following failure by the shareholder to raise funds to clear the debt owed to different creditors.

Government is still to secure a strategic partner for the airline and is currently working on modalities to make the company more attractive to investors by clearing of the existing debt as well embarking on a retrenchment exercise.
