Bulawayo Athletics Club to host Masters bowling tourney

BULAWAYO Athletics Club will host this year's Masters bowling tournament towards the end of this month.

The three-day tournament, which has attracted the country's top bowlers, is pencilled for May 24-26.

On the first day, men and women bowlers will play three games each.

Bob Torrie, who is part of the organisers in Bulawayo, said the stage was now set for the tournament.

"All is set for the competition and we are expecting the players to be in Bulawayo on May 23," said Torrie.

The Bulawayo Athletics Club greens will showcase the talents of Denis Streak, who won the Masters in 2011, and will this year compete against some of the top bowlers from Harare who include Terry Bowes, Jono Evans, Mike Eaton, Clive Robertson and defending champion Tom Craven.

Streak, who is also a former Zimbabwean first-class cricketer and father of former Zimbabwe captain, Heath, has been confirmed as one of the participants by the organisers.

Competition is also expected to be high in the women's category.

Kerry Craven, who has been selected to represent Zimbabwe in the World Bowls Champion of Champions singles later this year, will also feature on the Bulawayo greens where she will face one of Bulawayo's top bowlers, Jane Rigby, and defending champion Allyson Dale.

Rigby of Old Miltonians Sports Club said the competition promises to be tough.

"We are looking forward to the Masters. Last year I did not play but now I will play it promises to be very tough. I will give it my best shot.

"We have been practicing for a few weeks," said Rigby.
