LOBENGULA Boxing Club boxers on Saturday did well in an invitational tournament that was held at their home on Saturday night.

Lightweight division bright prospect Milton Moyo from the Lobengula Club got the better of Thulani Mpundu from the Zimbabwe National army (ZNA) following a 3-0 unanimous decision from the judges in what was voted the bout of the tournament.

Wiseman Tshuma of Lobengula recorded a 2-1 split decision victory over Midlands' Dominic Magorimbo in the light flyweight division while Melusi Nyathi also shone in his home ring as he knocked the lights out of ZNA's John Chiwora in the fourth round in their bantamweight bout.

Nketa Boxing Club's dynamo Brighton Masiyambumbi pounded ZNA's Phineas Gondo into throwing the towel in the first round that lasted no more than a minute in the welterweight division while heavyweight Vincent Muziri from One Brigade also got a 3-0 unanimous decision over Trevor Mpofu of Tshaka Boxing Club.

A kickboxing light welterweight bout between Lobengula's Morris Jamela and Forget Muraswa from Beitbridge was also witnessed with the former winning following a 3-0 unanimous decision.

Elington Muter, who is a trainer at Lobengula Boxing Club, said he was happy with his boxing club's tournament but singled out Milton Moyo for praise.

"I am so overwhelmed by how our boxers are coming up and they seem to be improving all the time. In this tournament we recorded seven wins out of 10 bouts. I however have to single out Moyo whom I have been training for two years and has so far lost only one out of seven bouts.

“He keeps improving with each fight he takes and he has been nominated by the Zimbabwe Amateur Boxing Association to go and represent the country in Botswana next month with Brighton Masiyambumbi,” he said.

Mutero said he was grateful to the sponsors, Revival Motors, who made it possible for them to host the tournament and Bulawayo Amateur Boxing Association (Baba) chairman Petros Masiyambumbi  who ran around organising and inviting provinces. He said the tournament, which was supposed to be a provincial  tournament, ended up getting national status because of the attendance from other provinces.

Baba secretary Irvine Mathe thanked the Lobengula club for organising a successful tournament which made Baba, the motherbody, proud.

He also lauded the club's mixture of the two boxing disciplines, amateur boxing and kickboxing.
