A 25-YEAR-OLD herdman from Bulilima District raped his 37-year-old mentally unstable neighbour in the presence of her three children aged between three and five years and claimed to have committed the offence in a bid to make her sane.

Samson Moyo, who is employed in Figtree, upon his arrest, claimed that he had received a vision during his sleep where he was assigned to sleep with the complainant in order to heal her.

Moyo appeared on initial remand before Plumtree magistrate Mr Gideon Ruvetsa facing rape charges.

He was remanded in custody to 2 July.

Prosecuting, Mr Elisha Mazorodze said Moyo broke into his victim's bedroom hut around 11pm on 20 April while she was asleep with the three children.

"Moyo entered into the bedroom hut unnoticed and started fondling the woman's body and he joined her in her blankets. He then undressed and took off the victim's clothes and raped her once. Moyo then fled the scene," said Mr Mazorodze.

He said the matter came to light when the woman was quizzed by her brother who noticed some shoe prints within the yard.

Mr Mazorodze said the woman narrated to her brother what had transpired and a report was made to the police.

He said Moyo who had fled from his workplace was arrested recently.

In another incident which occurred recently a 35-year-old Plumtree woman was allegedly raped by a knife wielding teenager in a bushy area near Plumtree District Hospital while she was on her way to visit an ill relative at the health institution.

The culprit who fled from the scene after committing the offence is reported to have then ordered the woman to escort him to his house where he wanted to rape her for the second time but she managed to flee and sought refuge at a nearby homestead.

The councillor of the area where the incident occurred, Bakani Tshuma, confirmed receiving a report on the matter which occurred close to his homestead.

"There is a woman who was raped while passing by my suburb on her way to give food to a sick relative around 6am. She was passing through a bushy area and almost nearing a tarred road when she was raped.

"She said she did not know the culprit but she noticed that he was a teenager. This culprit is reported to have raped the woman and then forced her to dress up while he stood guard.

"The woman later ran away and was rescued by residents where she narrated what had transpired to her," said Clr Tshuma.

He said the matter was later reported to the police who attended the scene.

Residents who attended to the woman said the victim came rushing to their neighbourhood covered in dust.

They said they spotted the man, who was wearing a black top running away.
