A 40-year-old Beitbridge woman was yesterday fined R3 000 or six months in jail for smuggling a consignment of flea market goods worth $5 000 into the country through an undesignated entry point along the Limpopo River.

Ahurengwi Muleya, of Dumba village in Beitbridge, was convicted on her own plea of guilty to contravening a section of the Customs and Excise Act (smuggling) by Beitbridge provincial resident magistrate Ms Gloria Takundwa.

The smuggled goods were also forfeited to the State as part of the sentence.

The prosecutor, Ms Memory Mandityira, said on 24 July at around 7.30pm, Muleya smuggled an assortment of flea market goods into the country through Panda Mine illegal crossing point along the Limpopo River.

She was, however, intercepted by police officers who were patrolling along the border.

Muleya was asked to produce the customs declaration forms and she failed to do so leading to her arrest and subsequent seizure of the smuggled goods, which included handbags, clothes, footwear and nappies.
