President Robert Mugabe says it is time to change the donor-recipient relationship that has existed between the European Union (EU) and African Caribbean and Pacific (APC) countries for the past 41 years.

Addressing the 8th ACP Summit in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, Africa's representative, President Mugabe called for a paradigm shift on the EU-ACP relations following the 2009 Lisbon Treaty by the EU which brought on board some countries from Eastern Europe.

"We are a rich people with enough resources of our own and it's time to wean off from the old pattern of the dependency syndrome," said Mugabe.

He added that value edition and beneficiation should be the way to go for ACP countries rather than allow the continous flow of primary products to the west, leading to the economic boom in the developed world.

A group of eminent persons led by former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo is looking at the new relationship for the post 2020 ACP.
