VILLAGERS under Chief Charumbira area, Masvingo are living in fear after a donkey suspected to be infected with rabies mauled a 62-year-old woman in the wee hours as she went out to relieve herself.

The donkey which was drinking water from a container, mauled the unsuspecting Sostina Tukanai of Hapazari Village. The Department of Veterinary Services officers have since killed and burnt the donkey.

Villagers told The Chronicle that Tukanai who sustained injuries on her left thigh, was rushed to Bondolfi Clinic in the same village after the attack.

Her grandchild, a seven-year-old boy, watched helplessly as his grandmother was being attacked by the donkey. A villager who heard her screams later rescued her. Tukanai said she went outside her hut to relieve herself and heard some movements of what she thought were her cattle.

She said the next thing the donkey was attacking her.

"I struggled with the animal after it pushed me down. I was mauled on my left thigh. I nearly passed out.

I could've died as my body became weak by each passing second as I struggled with the animal," said Tukanai.

Tukanai's neighbour, Respina Muzari, said they rushed to her homestead when they heard her screaming. She said they chased the donkey away before rushing her to a local clinic.

The village head, Ruzive Hapazari, said the donkey has since been killed.

Masvingo Department of Veterinary Services provincial officer Dr Ernest Dzimwasha could not be reached for comment.
