A MUTARE woman was accused of deliberately siring several children with different men as a business venture and claim substantial amounts as maintenance.

Anyway Nyarira dragged his wife Annia Nyahokwe to Mutare Civil Courts applying for a downwards maintenance variation. Mrs Yeukai Chigodora presided over the case. Nyarira had been paying $150 as maintenance for his child with Nyahokwe and he wanted it varied to $25 per month.

Asked what circumstances had changed to warrant the application, Nyarira told the court that Nyahokwe had two other children and all their fathers were paying the same amount as maintenance for their children.

"The money is more than enough for her, Your Worship. She is clearly using child bearing as a business because all day she is sitting at home waiting for the $450 maintenance that comes in monthly.

"She has suddenly become a rich woman because of our hard-earned money. If the court pleases, I beg it to vary my amount down to $25.

"The fact that she is getting maintenance from all her children's fathers is reason enough for my amount to be varied downwards."

He also informed the court that he only earned $190 instead of the $300 that Nyahokwe had stated when the $150 maintenance was granted.
"She misinformed the court that I earn $300.

"My monthly income is $190.

"I cannot afford to pay $150 monthly to someone who is getting maintenance from three men," he begged the court.

Nyahokwe, however, told the court that it was her right to claim maintenance from all three fathers of her children since they had been negligent fathers all along.

Since Nyarira failed to produce a payslip, but only produced a small paper that had been stamped by a fellow workmate which gave the magistrate reason to doubt its authenticity, the matter was adjourned to March 19 and he was ordered to go and get a valid payslip.
