Zimra to introduce mobile taxing

The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority is conducting a pilot project with the banking community before introducing mobile (SMS) taxing mechanisms cross border traders, official have said.

Allan Saruchera, Zimra Head of IT services disclosed the development at the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC), ICT symposium in Harare.

Zimra has plans to introduce mobile taxing through SMS messages so that traders and other travelers can be taxed in the comfort of their offices.

He added that the initiative which is still at pilot stage will help to ease congestion at the country's border posts and will also facilitate quick clearance of goods.

"Zimra will collaborate with network service providers in order to acquire sufficient bandwidth to roll out the project," Saruchera said.

Technical committee comprising relevant stakeholders such as from the retail, business, government and banking sector has been set up to achieve the intended initiative, according to Saruchera.

"We wish to try by all means to minimise the handling of cash so we need to allocate this responsibility to the banking sector."

He added that the penetration of mobile telephone in Zimbabwe had gone beyond unimaginable levels and Zimra had to move with time and adopt such technology.
