A 38-YEAR-OLD Chiredzi man is battling for life at Chiredzi District Hospital after he was allegedly stabbed with an Okapi knife by a friend while restraining him from fighting a fellow imbiber for refusing to go home, police confirmed yesterday.

Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Charity Mazula said the incident happened on Friday at around 8PM.

Insp Mazula said Regerai Ndione cheated death by a whisker when he was stabbed on the chest and arm by Tafara Nyaro of Section 7 Hippo Valley while restraining him from fighting a fellow reveller who had refused to go home after a beer binge.

Insp Mazula said Nyaro was arrested and is assisting police with investigations.

"I can confirm receiving a case of attempted murder that took place in Hippo Valley on Friday night. We have since arrested the suspect, Tafara Nyaro who is now assisting police with investigations. He will appear in court soon facing charges of attempted murder," said Insp Mazula.

She said Nyaro, Ndione and Tadious Jeke were drinking beer at one of the bars in Hippo Valley on the fateful day.

"The trio arrived at the bar together at around 5PM after which they started drinking beer. At around 8PM after having one too many, the three men agreed to leave for home but Jeke later changed his mind and chose to remain behind," said Insp Mazula.

"This did not go down well with Nyaro who confronted Jeke on why he was remaining yet they had all agreed to leave. A misunderstanding arose between the two and this degenerated into a fight.

"Upon realising that his friends were fighting Ndione, who had walked some distance away rushed back and tried to restrain them.

"However, this was not taken lightly by Nyaro who fumbled in his pocket and produced an Okapi knife before turning on Ndione."

He stabbed him twice on the chest and once on the right arm.

Insp Mazula warned members of the public from carrying dangerous weapons like okapi knives.

"Okapi knives fall in the dangerous weaponry category therefore being found with one is an offence. People should not resolve matters when they are drunk. Alcohol may impair one's judgment," she said.
