An elder with the Zimbabwe Assemblies of God (Zaoga) Church in Bikita committed suicide last week, hours after confessing to his wife and relatives that social problems, believed to have been triggered by his impregnating three women from the same assembly, were taking their toll on him.

Manasa Kunedzimwe (45), who was employed by the Ministry of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture as an office assistant, hanged himself near the Nyika district education offices in Bikita. Police have confirmed the incident.

According to Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero, Kunedzimwe killed himself after telling his wife and some relatives of his intentions which he said were necessitated by social problems that he was facing. Family sources disclosed that Kunedzimwe solicited sexual favours from several women after promising to secure temporary teaching places for them.

"Three of these women fell pregnant and threatened to expose the whole matter to his wife. We believe this might have pushed our relative into taking his life," said a family member.

On the fateful day, added the source, Kunedzimwe telephoned some of his relatives informing them of his "impending" death.

He is said to have also called his wife giving her directions to where his body would be found.

"Upon getting the call, the wife rushed to the police who followed the directions she had been given and, true to Kunedzimwe's word, his body was found hanging from a tree," said the family member.

Bikita district education officer Mr Lawrence Jenjedzwa said he was still failing to come to terms with Kunedzimwe's tragic death.
