LESOTHO Prime Minister Tom Motsoahae Thabane is expected to officially open the 102nd Harare Agriculture Show this Friday. Zimbabwe Agricultural Show Society public relations officer Ms Heather Madombwe said the Lesotho premier would tour some stands before officially opening the show.
Prime Minister Thabane was elected into office in June this year.
Last year, President Mugabe officially opened the show. This year's show, which is being held under the theme "Innovative, Inspirational and Informative †has seen 300 farmers exhibiting in the crop and livestock sectors. The show started on a low note but attendance has continued to increase each day. Over the weekend, 6 000 people attended the show bringing the total number of show goers since the opening to 8 000.
The figure is expected to pick this week with companies also recording meaningful business. The bulk of the show goers were parents and their children who took advantage of the low turnout to have peaceful tours of the stands. Most parents said they preferred bringing their children for the show during the first days because of the low turnout and less congestion.
Last year a Harare boy went missing prompting ZAS to boost security. This year plain clothes security officers have been deployed to work jointly with ZAS officers to maintain peace and security. ZAS has also installed a closed circuit television for security purposes.
Police spokesman Inspector James Sabau said: "We have increased security and so far we have not recorded any crime or incident of lost children.â€
Yesterday, show goers were treated to horse riding, fireworks and a performance by Peter Moyo and Utakataka Express. The bulk of the people visited the amusement park where children were treated to jumping castles, face painting and horse rides from the ZRP and Zimbabwe Prison Services.
The Zimbabwe Defence Forces stand was also popular with children. Fireworks displays are slated for Wednesday and Saturday.
