Man gets 140hrs community service for posing as a cop to get free meals

A Karoi man who masqueraded as a police detective in order to get free meals at a restaurant for more than a week has been ordered to perform 140 hours of community service after a Karoi magistrate convicted him.

Magistrate Mrs Nyaradzo Ringisayi initially slapped Albert Saliki with a 10-month jail term but conditionally sus­pended six months on condition he set­tles the US$43 bill he incurred at the restaurant by this Friday.

The remaining four months were also suspended on condition he per­forms 140 hours of community service at the Karoi Magistrates' Court.

It is the State's case that on July 4 this year, Saliki visited Supreme Restaurant in Karoi, posing as a Makuti-based police detective.

He told restaurant pro­prietor Mr Jaswell Kapesa that he wanted meals for which he would pay after complet­ing his "special operation" in the area.

He then served Saliki and an elderly man, whom Saliki claimed was a sus­pect, a plate of sadza and a drink each. On July 14, information filtered through to Mr

Kapesa that the "Makuti detective" had been spotted at Karoi Police Station where he was quizzed in a theft case.
Mr Kapesa then filed a police report.
