A suspected stock thief, who was allegedly caught red-handed slaughtering a stolen gpat in Zvimba, has appeared in court.
The court heard that, Mercy Milanzi (32), had initially supplied false information that her name was Lucia Phiri upon her arrest by Zvimba police in a bid to escape charges.
Milanzi appeared before the court last week and was remanded in custody to August 15 for trial at the Murombedzi circuit court.
Prosecutor, Morris Mlilo, told the court that on August 2 this year at around 1 am at Zanyaka village in Zvimba, Milanzi went to Last Mutau's homestead and found a penned she goat which she drove from the pen and butchered it in the nearby bush.
Mutau heard unusual sounds and went to investigate and discovered that the pen was open while one of his goats was roaming around. MUtau checked the surroundings for his other goat and allegedly found Milanzi busy skinning it. She allegedly bolted from the scene. Mutau then went to wake up his brother Leviticus Marimo and the two gave chase.
They caught up with Milanzi who was heading toward Murombedzi growth point with her loot stashed in a plastic bag, the court further heard. Also recovered were the goat's head and hooves. Magistrate Ngoni Nduna presided of the case.
