HARARE businessman Gary Thompson was hit by a car belonging to three suspected robbers while trying to apprehend them for stealing a bag containing an I-Pad and some cash at a coffee shop in Borrowdale.

The businessman sustained a broken arm and is one of the State witnesses lined up to give evidence in the trial of Collins Dzinoreva (33), Aiden Fellow (40) and Martin Java.

The trio, which was represented by Mr Tafadzwa Madotsa and is being charged with robbery, appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe, who remanded them in custody to August 3. The complainant in the case is Mr Graham Williams, who is self-employed as a design consultant.

On July 15 this year at around 1045 hours Mr Williams was having a cup of coffee at Freshly Grounds Coffee Shop at Sam Levy Village in Borrowdale.

During that time, he had a black bag containing an Apple I-Pad on a chair next to him.

The trio arrived at the coffee shop in their getaway vehicle, a white Nissan Tilda without registration plates and delegated each other roles.

Dzinoreva and Fellow went to the coffee shop to spot their target, while Java remained in the car waiting for his accomplices, it is alleged.

Dzinoreva approached Mr Williams and bumped into him to disturb his attention, while Fellow stole the bag containing the I-Pad before speeding to their parked getaway car from different directions.

Mr Williams is alleged to have discovered that the pair had stolen his bag and he made a follow-up with the assistance of Mr Thompson, Mr Steve Alberts and Mr Jason Smith.

Mr Alberts, a member of the ZRP crime consultative committee, drove his Subaru Forester and gave chase, while Mr Thompson alerted in-coming and out-going motorists from the car park to block the getaway vehicle.
