China donates computers, TVs and scanners to Parliament

THE Parliament of Zimbabwe yesterday received computers, television sets and scanners from the Chinese government. The goods were handed over by outgoing Chinese ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Xin Shunkang, at a ceremony attended by

Speaker of the House of Assembly Mr Lovemore Moyo and President of the Senate, Mrs Edna Madzongwe.

Mrs Madzongwe lauded the Chinese government for the support it has rendered to Zimbabwe.

"We have received quite a lot from the Chinese government and we thank them for that. They are our good friends who do not want to see us lag behind in the area of information technology," she said.

Mrs Madzongwe said she hoped that the construction of the new Parliament will commence soon following the Chinese government's acceptance to fund the project.

Mr Moyo echoed similar sentiments and promised that the equipment will be put to good use.

"We are living in a world of technology and therefore it is important for Parliament to also move with the times rather than being left behind when the rest of the world is moving to become technologically advanced.

"We want to promise you that that the equipment will be put to good use and has come at a time when we are trying to modÂernise our Parliament," he said.

Mr Xin said Zimbabwe and China enjoyed cordial relations and said during his tenure he had urged Chinese business people to invest in Zimbabwe.

He said his government wanted to assist the country develop so that there was political stability which is conducive for investment.

"Some Chinese business people would ask me that they wanted to invest but were worried about turbulence that could occur during elections.

"I would, however, tell them the question was how do we then help (Zimbabwe) in avoiding that turbulence," he said.

He said he hoped the equipment will improve the working conditions at Parliament.

The donation included 45 laptops, 20 printers, 10 television sets and 25 scanners.
