Gweru man loses his Mazda B1600 truck to thieves

A Gweru man, 48, had his Mazda B1600 truck stolen in Gweru's CBD (central business district) while he was at a local bar playing darts.

Confirming the incident, acting police spokesperson for Midlands Province Assistant Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the complainant, Mr Stephen Hove, left his Mazda B1600 truck along 5th Street where he later found it missing.

"On Monday night at about 7pm, Mr Stephen Hove of Montrose in Gweru drove to Legion Bar along Fifth Street, Gweru, where he then parked his vehicle, a Mazda B1600, outside. He went into the bar to play darts and at about 8 pm he went out intending to drive home only to find his truck missing," said Asst Insp Mahoko.

He said the matter was reported to the police who have since launched a manhunt for the car thieves.

"Police are investigating the matter and no arrests have been made so far. The truck is also still missing and we appeal to members of the public with information that might assist us in arresting the suspects to approach any nearest police station," said Asst Insp Mahoko.

He advised motorists to be wary of a gang of car thieves going around using specialised car keys to unlock parked vehicles and getting away with valuables.

"I also take this opportunity to warn motorists of a new method being employed by criminals to steal cars or valuables from locked and parked vehicles," said Asst Insp Mahoko.

"These criminals use a gate lock piece, which interferes with the any car's central locking system before they open and steal valuables from the vehicles. They also use the same method to get away with cars."
