Zimbabwean Immigration Department authorities on Wednesday pressed fresh charges against British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) classical music presenter Petroc Trelawny.

The Zimbabwean authorities charged Trelawny of violating the conditions under which his visitor entry certificate had been issued.  He was arrested in Zimbabwe's second largest city, Bulawayo for working without a permit but the Attorney General (AG)'s Office on Monday declined to prosecute him. He was represented by lawyers Munyaradzi Nzarayapenga of Dube-Banda, Nzarayapenga and Partners Legal Practitioners, who is a member lawyer of ZLHR and Nosimilo Chanayiwa of ZLHR.

Following the fresh charges, the presenter is expected in court on Thursday. He had been due to be released on Tuesday but Immigration officials refused to give him back his travel documents, saying they wanted to consult with their superiors and the AG's office.

On Wednesday morning High Court Judge Justice Nicholas Ndou ordered police to refrain from keeping guard on him at the United Bulawayo Hospital where he had been detained due to an injured arm when he slipped in a police cell. The Judge also ordered Immigration Department officials to facilitate Trelawny's lawful stay in Zimbabwe after the expiration of his visa, which was valid up to Monday.

Immigration Department authorities on Wednesday issued Trelawny with a temporary permit allowing him to stay in Zimbabwe until Thursday which he paid $1 000 for.
