The Movement for Democratic Change led by Professor Welshman Ncube has called for the immediate resignation of Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) governor, Gideon Gono, in the wake of graft and allegations being raised against him by a former confidante.
Munyaradzi Kereke, Gono's former financial advisor at the RBZ, alleged the governor had among others stole $100 000 from one of his companies, a medical aid society.
During a court case on Monday, in which two RBZ employees are accused of assaulting Kereke's personal driver, Kereke said Gono had hired two employees to attack his driver.
But Kurauone Chihwayi, the MDC spokesperson, said in a statement on Tuesday, Gono should voluntarily resign because the allegations levelled against him are serious.
"In light of the gravity of the allegations that keep on mounting against the Reserve Bank Governor from his alleged former confidante Munyaradzi Kereke, the MDC believes that it would be in the interest of justice and transparency for the reserve bank governor to step down."
He said an independent commission of enquiry comprising individuals of good standing in society must be set up to investigate the matter because the allegations had the potential to scare away investors.
