LOVEMORE Majaivana’s fans have launched an online petition to get him back on stage after nearly a decade of a self-imposed musical hiatus.

Majaivana, 58, left Zimbabwe for the United States after recording his acclaimed last studio album – Isono Sami – in 2000.

He now lives in Texas and has reportedly spurned dozens of financial offers to perform in the United Kingdom and South Africa.

Now fans have taken to Facebook to bring their idol out of retirement.

A petition went online on Wednesday and nearly 300 fans had already signed up by Thursday.

“This petition … is for Majaivana's fans to show him just how much they miss him. As they say, a little absence makes the heart grow fonder and Majaivana's absence has done doubly that,” the fans say on the page.

Majaivana declines media interviews and reasons for his absence are hard to come by, but the singer is known to have been despondent with the Zimbabwean music industry, and as far back as 1992 declared in an interview: “I spent 15 years of my life lining other people's pockets. Sure, they didn’t force me to, and now I want to get out.”

He didn’t carry out his threat and continued singing, and his move to Harare in the late 1990s established him as a cross-over artist – a rare feat in Zimbabwe which only Oliver Mtukudzi had previously attained.

Putting together his band again should not be a problem for Majaivana – his son Derick is following in his footsteps and has relaunched the Zulu Band with new members.

Fans have been posting messages on the Facebook Wall for the ‘Petition to Get Lovemore Majaivana out of Retirement’.

“Our living legend and prophet , cum back , we need u desperately,” added Mbuso Moyo.
