UGLINESS in Zimbabwe is slowly proving to be a lucrative opportunity, in direct contrast to the scenario years ago, where it was seen as a curse.

Tsholotsho Resource Committee yesterday announced that it is launching its version of Mr Ugly in the district making it three pageants of this nature in the country so far.

Surely this is their time to shine.

The two other pageants were held in Beitbridge and Harare.

The Harare pageant was won by William Masvinu (38), while the pageant at the border town was won by Austin Mbewe.

The resource committee's chairperson Greatmans Sibanda told Chronicle Entertainment that they would, at the weekend, launch the contest that would see the ugliest men vying for top honours on the ramp.

"The actual contest is on 6 October, but we are officially launching the pageant this weekend," said Sibanda.

He said the Mr Ugly contest would be unveiled alongside two other pageants, Mr and Miss Tsholotsho.

"We have received positive response from prospective Mr Ugly contestants so far and they are trickling in to register at a satisfactory rate," said Sibanda.

He said 25 men had so far registered for the ugliness competition.

"The response shows that people in this category have been left out on many things for quite a long time, such events have them in mind," said the organiser.

He said the winner would be the ambassador of Tsholotsho in terms of preserving the district's resources.

"He will also work closely with vulnerable groups especially orphans and the underprivileged," he said.

Sibanda said for Miss Tsholotsho contest, 45 girls had registered so far while 23 males had come up for the Mr Tsholotsho title.

He said the pageant would be accompaniedd by a soccer and netball competition at Tsholotsho Business Centre.

"We are working closely with Fingaz Modelling Agency and they are the ones who are giving us direction on how we will conduct the pageant," said Sibanda.

He, however, said they were in the process of engaging the owner of the Mr Ugly pageant, Lovemore Chonzi, on the rights of conducting the contest.

"We are yet to engage him to get the rights to host the pageant and we are hopeful that something solid will emerge from our interaction with him," said Sibanda.

Contacted for comment Chonzi said the Mr Ugly pageant was a community entertainment contest and would not have any problems allowing other people to hold it as long as they approached him first.

"At the moment I cannot say much about issuing the rights because my lawyers and the legal team just submitted our approval form to National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (Nacz) to make it exclusive since it is my brainchild," said Chonzi.

He said after the legal procedure has been completed, people interested in Mr Ugly contest were free to approach him.
