Delta Zimbabwe beverages beer brewer, Stephen Moyo, has achieved a unique feat not only for Africa but for the whole world.

Moyo was crowned the 2010 SAB Miller beer taster of the year for Africa. He won a floating trophy and cash. Moyo also came third in the global beer tasting competitions, which were won by Carmen Herrera of Canary Islands. Kristy Zigich of the Golden Brewery in the USA came second. Moyo won the ticket to represent Africa after beating more than 800 other champion tasters from African breweries across the continent.

“It takes several months of meticulous and intense studying and identifying beer flavours for one to be a good taster. At both the regional and international competitions we were asked to identify multiple flavours added to sample beers,” said Moyo, 47.

“For a brewer to qualify to enter the competitions he or she should be constantly assessed at his or her local brewery by supervisors. A good brewer should not only have good beer tasting skills but should also be able to taste the quality of the raw material,s such as water, sugar, maize, malt and yeast. I have been regularly assessed by my local Quality Assurance manager who periodically communicated with SABMiller ‘s Chief brewer, Paul King who is also our regional assessor,” said Moyo.

He joined Delta Belmont‘s beer breweries in 1992 as a trainee brewer, and has undergone many internal and external beer tasting courses since then. Belmont Brewery manager, David Nyika said: “Moyo’s has really done us proud and put Delta Beverages on the international map. His achievement simply shows that our tasters are among one of the best in the world.”

Nyika said the company had been greatly inspired by Moyo’s achievement and this year it would compete in the global brewery of the year competitions.
