A 55-year-old man has been arrested for raping his wife in South Africa's Soweto suburb, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.

Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said the man allegedly beat up and raped his wife on 17 February, when she returned home from a party.

"The man forcefully undressed her, beat her and raped," he said.

The woman went to the police and the man was arrested on Tuesday.

He was expected to appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
