Drunken youths invades the stage, ruin Miss Africa Day pageant

CONFUSION reigned supreme at the much-awaited Miss Africa Day pageant held at Walkers Pub on Friday night as drunken youths invaded the stage and disrupted the modelling competition.
Two youths knocked down the speakers that the organisers had put in place and in their drunkenness fell on the power cable causing a 30-minute delay in proceedings.
One of the youths was so inebriated that he slept on live power cables oblivious of the danger he was in.
Organisers were up to their necks trying to control the crowd that had gathered with some of them touching the models.
The host Joe the OG tried his level best to double up as the stage bouncer to no avail.
The 12 female and three male models decided to hold a fashion show instead of a competition because of the mayhem.
Not to be deterred the models took to the ramp and showcased their traditional dresses and carried grass baskets to add to the African feel.
The second category was the ever-popular swimwear and this was a crowd favourite and the overzealous highly intoxicated revellers tried to go onto the stage and join the models.
Afterwards the models entered the stage in their evening wear that had dazzling outfits.
Last on the menu was the theme of the night, Afrocentric, and the models had brown printed tops and matching skirts.
The dresses had pictures of traditional utensils such as udiwo, inkezo and ingiga.
Speaking after the show Joe the OG said the show could have been better but bemoaned the conduct of the rowdy youths.
He said the prize money was shared equally among the models and they were given their participation fees.
"The modelling show could have been better. The bad elements almost spoilt the show. I am happy with the models' performance and we will consider something more appropriate as an alternative venue for future modelling shows at Walkers," said Jo.
He said it was Africa Day and celebrating the beauty of Africa was the theme of the show.
"We had a packed line-up but you know not everything went according to plan. We want to celebrate being African and we thought we could do that by staging a modelling show," said Joe.
Models who participated in the show were Belinda Muhlwa, Clemencia Gushungo, Lindiwe Sibanda, Nicole Charlie,
Sharon Ngwenya, Anita Nash, Progress Sibanda, Caroline Moyo, Khanyisile Nkomo, Victoria Khumalo, Lorraine Jefferies and Faith Holmes.
There were male models also at the show, Pardon Khanye, Andile Mdlongwa and Selwyn Zimbudzana.
