The British trade delegation that was in the country to explore business opportunities says it has had fruitful, frank and open discussions with various government officials and will carry a positive message and has endorsed the country as a safe destination for investment.

The five-member British delegation is the first sponsored by the British government to come to Zimbabwe in 20 years.

Trade mission leader, Alex Lambeth, expressed his optimism for future trade and investment in Zimbabwe saying the visit has been a success.

"We were impressed at the range and quality of the opportunities on offer, and the clear and consistent message from the public and private sector that Zimbabwe is open for business," he said.

The delegation accompanied by British Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Ms Catriona Laing paid a courtesy call on the Vice President, Dr Joice Mujuru at her Munhumutapa offices this Thursday morning.

Emerging from a closed door meeting with Dr Mujuru, leader of the trade delegation, Mr Alexander Lambeth said British investors have interests in infrastructure development projects such as power generation, transport and mining, among others.

Over the past years, Britain has been channelling humanitarian support through non-governmental organisations.

Ambassador Laing said the two countries are now on a different path and investors from Britain are encouraged by the government's policy adopted through the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Staff Monitoring Programme.

Britain has been leading the sanctions campaign, even when other countries in the European Union (EU) block were expressing their desire to have the illegal embargo on Zimbabwe lifted.

The mission held meetings with the Vice President Mujuru, six government Ministers, the heads of Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA), Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA), National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ), Zimbabwe Mining Development Company (ZMDC), Zimbabwe National Roads Authority (ZINARA), development partners, captains of industry and leading British firms in Zimbabwe.
