Zimbabwe's legendary bread making company Lobels Holdings has today stopped production at its Harare plant in a move that could cause bread shortages.

However, factories in Bulawayo are not affected.

“Lobels Holdings Limited would like to inform its valued customers, suppliers, stakeholders and the general public that it will temporarily stop production at its Harare Bakery from 10th April, 2012 to 17th April 2012” reads a press statement.

The firm says the temporary shutdown is meant to comply with the annual statutory requirement for its boiler maintenance.

“It is necessary to allow for better product and services levels when we re-open,” added the statement.

The shutdown comes during the holiday period when demand for confectioneries tends to rise.

Lobels Holdings has plans to invest $3,6 million on refurbishing and replacing its Harare and Bulawayo plants with a view to significantly ramp up production.

The country's oldest bakery has reportedly set its sights on increasing daily production from 100 000 to 300 000 loaves by the end of this year.
