Mzingwane High School remains best in Mat South

MZINGWANE High School's reputation as one of Matabeleland South and Zimbabwe's best secondary schools has stayed intact with generations of pupils continuing to excel at both O- and A-Level.

Last year's results were exceptional and will be a major talking point when parents meet to celebrate and review the past 12 months this morning. For the umpteenth time, parents, pupils, business partners, the community and former students will meet at the school to celebrate another year.

The school head Moraka Magaya says the Advanced Level results were the best since 2001.

"I'm pleased to report that our 2014 A-Level were exceptional. Actually they are the best since 2001. We had a pass rate of 97,8 percent. Out of the 44 students who sat for the examinations only one student failed to get a full certificate," said Magaya flanked by his senior teacher and head of the English and Literature Department.

Magaya praised teachers and students in the following subjects who scored a 100 percent rate; Ndebele, Literature in English, Divinity, History, Physics and Business Studies.

"I would want to show my appreciation and say 'well done' to all 2014 A-Level students and teachers for doing us proud," said Magaya.

Magaya said the O-Level class of 2014 did not disappoint either. He said the boys had improved from a pass rate of 50 percent to 70.2 percent last year. He said the success was as a result of the hard work by both pupils and teachers.

Talent Khumalo was the best performer among the 'A' Levels with 18 points with Lierance Magwenzi second with 15.

Others in the top 15 were Thabo Ndou and Tinashe Mabika (14 points), Dumisani Ndlovu 13, Eugiene Sunduza 12, Berzel Tumbudze 12, Bongani Ncube 11, Simbarashe Nhawu 11, Musawenkosi Mafohla 10, Bukhosi Malinga 10, Wandile Nkiwane 10, Nkosilathi Ndlovu 10, Nqobani Masayile 10 and Perfect Nkomo 10. Mckringle Mhlanga attained the best pass in the O-Level examinations with 11 As and three Bs. Blessing Moyo had 10 As and three Bs, Lwazi Mpofu 10 As and one C. On 10th was Godbless Mahere four As, four Bs and one C. In a wide ranging interview, Magaya said the school had continued to shine even outside the classroom with pupils representing the school and province in a number of national tournaments.

The school's football team reached the finals of the national championships only to be knocked out at the quarter-final stage. There were commendable performances in athletics, beach volleyball, chess and volleyball.

Debate and public speaking reached the provincial finals of the National Association of Secondary School championships.

In a quiz competition run by the school, Mzingwane were first with John Tallach second with the Aids Awareness Club finishing on position two in a provincial contest.

Magaya said the school had taken the first two positions in the Mathematics Olympiad. The best nationally was Lwazilwenkosi Mpofu with Mackringle Mhlanga second.

The school head said the school had continued to impress in the tournament in recent years with six pupils among the country's top 10 in 2013. He described the school's speech and prize giving day today as a celebration of the recent Old Boys and reiterated his administration and school's commitment to helping the boys to achieve their potential.

Magaya commended several individuals for donating towards the day and the prizes for deserving pupils this morning.

The headmaster said respected South Africa based business personality Mthandazo Moyo would be guest of honour at an event to attract several members of the local leadership, educationists and members of the community.

The School Development Committee headed by Simba Mawere which helped on several development projects at the school was commended for a job well done.

They had managed to refurbish laboratories and hostels.

Mzingwane High School is one of the oldest institutions whose former students have excelled in wide variety of fields in the community.

Magaya paid tribute to those that headed the school before him mentioning man like Obadiah Mlilo the first Black head of the school from 1973 to 1978.

The SDC chairman Mawere commended Magaya, his teaching staff and ancillary staff for a job well done.

Apart from Moyo the guest of honour today, Chronicle Editor Mduduzi Mathuthu, Njabulo Bango, the Naph Bulawayo Province chairman, former national sprinter Elijah Nkala and How Mine Primary School headmaster a former Highlanders secretary are among some of the former students.
